Tan Line

This guy seems to be tanned only from the waist up,

something I've heard called "ditch digger tan."

 

Jim Giussi and Ralph Smith

We get a chevron effect from Jim Giussi (left) and Ralph Smith.

The tan lines, especially on Jim, are also nice.

 

Fishnet and tan lines

We got a lot of fish net here and some fine tan lines.

 

AMG Production

This one is no doubt part of some elaborate Bob Mizer AMG production.

The variation in tan levels and lines is interesting.

The tan lines loudly tell us this guy was a newbie nudist.

 

644-645 - One tanned, one not

The recruit on the left seems to have tan lines from a swim suit,

something I don't think I've seen before in this collection.

 

669-670 Tan Lines

Numbers 669 and 670 are more tanned than most of the men in the archive, and 670 even 

shows tan lines from working outdoors with no shirt and suspenders or bib overalls.

 

Chuck Renslow/Kris Studio Day

I'm quite embarrassed to say that, although I have posted several stray shots here and there, it's been over a year since I did a full series on the work of Chuck Renslow of Kris Studio.  An early and tireless activist for both freedom of expression and gay rights, Mr. Renslow is someone we all owe a huge debt of gratitude.  Let's start with Steve Reno and his tan lines.

 

Tan lines

The tan lines here are among the most distinct that  you'll see on Tex Murdock.

 

Around LA

Although I don't have the model's name, the location here is the LA Police Department's Parker Center.  This is another example of Pat Rocco's penchant for photographing nude men on the streets of LA.

 

Tan lines and a squint

It's hard to tell if this guy with nice tan lines is squinting 

or closed his eyes when the picture was snapped.

 

Tan lines and sand

Our final topsy turvy guy is doing a handstand in a sandy area near some mountains.

Those tan lines look like they were left by a 1940s bathing suit.

 

Goofy tan line

I don't know what this goofy guy on a ski slope is doing'

but his tan line curiously matches the horizon.

Normally, I would refer to this as a ditchdigger tan, but knowing Weinberger's model base,

I have to say he's more likely a biker gang member who rode topless all summer.

 

Bike Day, Part 2 - Nudes

We kick off part two with a Robert Giard photo of a bicyclist with tan lines.

It seems to be from 1976 or 77, and somehow I only just discovered this photographer.

Expect to see more of his excellent work here in the future.

 

Jose Martinez

Jose Martinez posed before a beach dune in 1945.

His tan lines are interesting.

 

At first glance I thought it was laundry day at some camp, but there are

 only towels on the line.  Our subject is wearing a jock and holding what

 might be the tank top type undershirt that produced those tan lines.

I have no provenance on this one, but I like the tan lines.
