Stanley Stellar

One of the things I like most about doing this blog is that I often find "new" photographers while doing research for topical themes.  That happened again recently when I was doing a series on The Piers of the West Village, and several excellent photos by Stanley Stellar showed up.  That led me to a wealth of material on line and a quick and deep respect for Mr. Stellar's work.  As I discovered and you will see, he was not obsessed with in your face genitalia like some of his peers, but he still conveys impactful sexuality. The photo above was made in 1981 by Peter Hujar at The Piers.

For a change of pace, I am only giving model names and dates (when known) 

and not writing captions for today's set.  I'm asking you viewers to do it in the comments,

and I will reply.  There are some subtle and not so subtle elements that you may 

enjoy more if you find them for yourselves.

1966 Tryout

This is the first of four Peter Hujar self portraits in today's series.  

It was part of his application packet for a 1966 photography 

workshop that apparently had competitive entry.  

I'm pretty sure he passed the audition.

I found this in my Hujar file with only the tag "O'Toole" attached.  Somehow I doubt that I got this from Larry K. because his contributions are always well labeled . . . unless I screw them up.
