Mid-Century Art

Although Mid-Century might technically be defined as between 1935 and 1965, we see the term most often used in reference to the 1950s and 60s.  It was the age of the ranch style house, furniture with clean, modern lines, and cars with fins   The art of the period was surprisingly diverse, and we will be looking at it today.  We start with this painting by Emilio Notte from 1950.

Patton

1955 is the date on this painting by Richard Banks
I think he was influenced by the Impressionistss.

Peter Orlovsky by Robert Lavigne

"Nude with Onions" by Robert Lavigne featured Peter Orlovsky as the model.
The year was 1954, and Mr. Orlovsky later became Allen Ginsberg's lover.

Richard Banks

I'd love to know the inspiration for this 1955 work by Richard Banks.  The Hawaiian leis and the pennant carnival decorations don't seem to go together.  Whatever else we might say,
Mr. Banks had an appreciation for a fine male derriere.

Edna Kelly

I'm left wondering if Edna Kelly had been looking at posing strap
physique photos around the time she painted this in 1956.

Atlas

The provenance on this one left me scratching my head.  The online seller
had a date, 1960, and a title, Nude as Atlas, but no artist's name.

Alysanne McGaffey

I like the color surround in this one by Alyssanne McGaffey ca. 1960.

Kirkland Main

It was 1964 when Kirkland Main painted this man in a jockstrap in the Academic style.

Ron Rish

Ron Rish appears to have been influence by Picasso,
but not to have copied him, in this 1965 painting.

Unknown X 3

This beautiful painting looks Mid-Century, but that is just my hunch.  It was found in the collection of a deceased gentleman with no artist's name, no title, and no date.  The estate sale auction house even hired an expert to try to decipher the indistinct signature, but to no avail.  I love it.

Mid-Century Modern

The Mid-Century Modern look emphasized simple lines with minimalist elements.  Today we will look at some models with furniture of the type.  We start with John Silva by Dave Martin.

Scandinavian

Both the decor and the young man give me a Scandinavian vibe.

Conflict

Miss Magnolia Thunderpussy would look right past the model with his legs in the air and point out that the busy wallpaper simply does not go well with the mid-century modern sofa.
