Double Day of the Derriere, Part 2 - Art

Continuing with our Day of the Derriere and switching to art,
we begin with this early 19th C. work by William Etty.

Leon Cogniet did this academic study of a male nude from the rear.

This seated male nude by Adolphe Joseph Hout in included because it is different and because it shows a tantalizing hint of this handsome man's face.

I found this one in a collection of drawings that were used in a 19th Century book about movement.
I wonder if the publisher (or the guy who drew it) knew how very good it was.

This early 20th C. standing nude is by Duncan Grant.

This reminds me of those men who ring church bells in English cathedrals.
Of course I don't think they are allowed to work in the nude.

Double Day of the Derriere, Part 1 - Photos

Today is dedicated to the loyal Bum Brigade with our main and art series both featuring all derriere shots.  We start with these two guys in the kitchen.  I'm sure they got something cooking in no time.

This guy seems to be fetching some fresh linens.

Did they have shag carpet in the days when men wore crew cuts?

I can't tell if he's getting in or out of the tub, but what does it matter?

I strongly suspect that this one is not pre-1975 vintage, but I couldn't resist its charm.
Edited to add:  These guys are Bruno and Toby from a COLT film.  See comments below.

And last, but not least, something especially for Albert in Belgium.

Those World War II Finns Again

Visiting the SA-Kuva Archive today for some of my favorite photos of naked Finnish soldiers from what they called the Continuation War and the rest of us called World War II.
These fellows seem to be doing their ablutions in a forest creek.

This is an interesting type of outdoor shower that I don't think I've seen anywhere else.

This looks like a combination swim-bath-laundry session.

No, that's not a sauna.  It is a delousing station to get rid of pests.  The men go in one room, and their clothes go in the other.  Apparently they used stronger chemicals on the clothes.

I hope it was August when these guys went for their swim.
Those Finnish lakes don't warm up (if you can call it that) until then.

Douglas of Detroit Day, Part 2 - Non-nudes

I was able to find surprisingly few G-rated Douglas of Detroit photos, and that puzzles me.  He did magazine work, but only a few photos came up on Google Image searches.  The police destroyed a lot of his work, but did they trash the G-rated material, too?  Anyway, I was able to find some quality photos, and we'll start with this one of Norbert Schemansky that shows Doug Juleff's lighting skills.

I suspect that Doug Juleff painted on the posing strap in this cover photo of Stan Stanczyk.

This is an even more demur photo of Leo Maryck than the derriere shot I posted earlier today.

This is the only calendar page I could find with a Douglas of Detroit photo.
It features Dick Buckholz, Mr. Michigan of 1949.

This is Don van Fleteren, one well built specimen.

Douglas of Detroit Day, Part 1 - Some Favorite Nudes

Both today's R and G-rated series will be photos by Douglas of Detroit.  We kick off the nude portion with this outdoor photo of Bob deWreese which I think was made in the Lake Michigan dunes.

No, these aren't twins or even brothers.  This is a double exposure of model Mike Dubel.  Douglas of Detroit like to use this technique, and I will do a future series on them.

The model for this rather sumptuous Douglas of Detroit photo was Joe Marcy.

Douglas of Detroit made relatively few derriere shots . . . but then again we may not really know because so much of his work was destroyed by the Detroit Police in 1958.  This is Leo Maryck.

Here we see Gene Staggs in a pose that had already been used over a
hundred years when Douglas of Detroit made this photo.

Hippies

I went through the hippie phase in college and somehow survived the experience, so that's today's theme.  We start with this very long haired guy.

No, this isn't a leftover from our nature boys in the grass theme from yesterday.
I found him in my hippie file folder all on his own.

I can't tell what this guy is doing, but he looks quite authentic.
For some reason I can only remember a few hippies who were hairy below the neck.

I think this photo was made at an early '70s commune on the island of Kauai here in Hawaii.

Splendor (and other things) in the Grass . . . or Ain't Nature Grand?

Today I'm taking Albert's suggestion and putting words in the mouths of some not quite comfortable models in the grass.  (I'm sure some of you can think of other uses for their mouths.)  Says this one:
"I'm fucking miserable.  I got car sick on the way up here, my ass feels like I'm sitting on broken glass, and I can feel things crawling on me.  All this for twenty lousy bucks!"

"First he ties me up.  Next he throws me on this pile of grass, sticks, and rocks and tells
me that he needs to 'arrange things.'  And now he says he's gonna pay me with a check.
What's a guy like me gonna do with a check?"

"Art photography, my ass.  This guy has copped more feels than my biology teacher back in high school.  Aw, shit!  Is that a snake over there by that gopher hole?"

"I've been up partying for three nights, and now this clown photographer wants me to lie down in prickly grass.  At least I got my fifty bucks up front and in my hand."
"I know it's cheating, but I'm gonna sit on my pants and hope nobody notices.  And what's that shuffling around in the bushes?  I hope it's not another damn skunk."

Celebrity Day, Part 2 - Rock Hudson

Rock Hudson was a movie and TV icon for several decades, with the period 1954-1968 being his biggest run of success.  Being the first celebrity to die of AIDS put a final end to his often questioned masquerade as straight, but oh, did he ever exude masculinity.  Today I'm featuring some of his early shirtless publicity photos, both solo and with friends.  Until his final illness, Rock aged rather well, and I will feature some photos from later in his life in a future set.

The guy tinkering under the hood is Bob Preble, a not particularly successful actor who was Rock Hudson's "roommate" during his early years in Hollywood.  This is the earliest photo documentation (about 1952) of any of Rock's lovers, although he certainly had some before Bob came along.

We are fortunate that Rock Hudson's need to appear manly (and fear of being outed as gay) caused him to frequently pose shirtless, often around pools.  "It's an ill wind that blows no good."

George Nader was a fellow closeted Hollywood gay actor who was sometimes rumored to have also been one of Rock Hudson's lovers.  All of Hudson's biographers and confidantes, however, say that they were just close friends.  Nader's lover, Mark Miller, became Rock's personal secretary,
and the couple inherited a good chunk of the superstar's estate.

I know this was a 50's western, but that scarf just doesn't fit with the beard stubble, ropes, and sultry facial expression.  There are no known nude photos of Rock Hudson, and in a way I am glad, because that fact leaves us with a bit of mystery and the image of a man who was very sexy with his pants on.

Celebrity Day, Part 1 - Some Nude Ones

Today is celebrity day, and we start with another nude photo of Burt Lancaster to follow up one I posted in a previous series.  I had many requests for more, so here he is again.

Peter Orlovsky and Allen Ginsberg posed for this photo in 1963.  The two were lovers in an open relationship from 1954 to Ginsberg's death in 1997.  Orlovsky, like Ginsberg, was a "Beat" poet,
but he also acted in four movies, including Andy Warhol's Couch.

This is supposed to be George Maharis, but I think it might be a photoshop or lookalike.

Yul Brynner posed for a whole series of George Platt Lynes photos, but I have never seen this type of notation on any of the others.  Probably made by a later collector.

Here is Joe Dallesandro with Candy Darling photographed by Richard Avedon.  Joe first appeared before cameras for AMG and Bruce of LA, but he and Candy became world wide celebrities thanks to appearing in Andy Warhol's 1968 movie Flesh where he picked up the nickname "Little Joe."  Lou Reed immortalized these two (and several others) in the lyrics to Walk on the Wild Side:

Candy came from out on the island,
In the backroom she was everybody's darling,
But she never lost her head
Even when she was giving head
She says, hey baby, take a walk on the wild side
Said, hey babe, take a walk on the wild side
And the colored girls go,

Doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo
Doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo
Doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo
Doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo
Doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo
Doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo
Doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo

Little Joe never once gave it away
Everybody had to pay and pay
A hustle here and a hustle there
New York City is the place where they said:
Hey babe, take a walk on the wild side
I said hey Joe, take a walk on the wild side

Bottomless Day

Those of you in the Bum Brigade probably looked at today's theme heading and thought,  "Oh, no!  A day without derrieres."  Well, you're right, but that's not the reason for the title.  These are all guys with no bottom clothing on.  They are also all by unknown or uncertain (to me, anyway) photographers. We start with Bob Jackson who worked for Pat Milo and Chuck Renslow of Kris Studio.  This looks a bit more like Renslow's style, but I can't say it's his for sure.

Benny Dishman's bottomless photo was Number J-14 in some late 60's photographer's catalog.
Like most of you, I think that name was probably made up.

No-name here has on a BMW denim jacket that some of you will no doubt like.  Like all of today's posts, I have no firm idea of who the photographer was.
