Douglas Crimp

In response to the AIDS crisis, Robert Giard began a series of portraits of as many influential gay artists and writers as he could.  The Particular Voices group of photos eventually came to number over 600.  This one of art critic, writer, and activist Douglas Crimp is a good example.

Legacy

When Robert Giard died suddenly in 2002, his surviving partner Jonathan Silin 

and other associates founded the Robert Giard Foundation to further the work 

of young photographers.  Thus, this fine artist's legacy lives on.  The 2019 photo 

above is Justin by Camilo Godoy, a prize winner sponsored by the foundation.

If my research is correct, Chris Soller (above) was a park ranger at Fire Island 

who eventually became the park superintendant before retiring in 2018.

I only discovered the work of Robert Giard a little over a year ago, but this will be my third series on his work.  I must like it a lot.  Today we start with an example of his earlies male nude works, a group of self portraits in which he never to my knowledge showed his face.
