Today I'm presenting a surfing themed series that combines R-rated and G-Rated photos with a sprinkling of poster art.  We start with a guy coming out of the water.

 

Gilgo Beach

In the first of three surfing posters in today's series we see a promo for a contest at Gilgo Beach, Long Island.  Who knew they had big waves for competition there?  This is the same area that later became known for the gruesome serial murders of 11 women, mostly sex workers.

 

Leroy Grannis

A pioneer of surfing photography, Leroy Grannis (1917-2011) wasn't too bad on a board himself.

Steven Landen appeared in the May, 1977 issue of Playgirl.

 

Duke Kahanamoku

Although he came to the world's attention as an Olympic swimmer, earning a gold medal in 1912, Duke Kahanamoku is best known for popularizing the sport of surfing.  A legend and hero here in Hawaii, there are bronze statues, memorial sports facilities, and other tributes to him.

Manhattan Beach

I've always wondered why they named a beach in LA County "Manhattan."

Turns out the developer was a homesick New Yorker.

 

Buzzy Trent

 

Surfing legend Buzzy Trent (1929-2006) is shown above in 1955.  A native of California, he moved to Hawaii at 23 to take on the huge waves on Oahu's North Shore.  Below, a cropped head shot.

Our second Playgirl surfer of the day is Angie Reno, who appeared in 1974.  We can just barely see his board in the right hand panel, but I'm sure none of your a looking at it.

Our third and final surfing poster has no text, making me think it was either cropped or used as a generic blank for multiple uses.  The suits and racing stripes are pure 1960s.

 

Sneakers

Those sneakers screamed "80s!" when I saw them, and sure enough,

a search found several similar in a 1986 catalog.  His hair style,

however, does not match, so I might be wrong.

 

Dude

Something tells me this guy liked being called "Dude."

 

Golden Oldie

 Our final surfing photo is literally a "golden oldie" featuring five golden retrievers and a nicely built surf bum showing us his bum.  I first posted this one in 2018, and the dog lovers went all happy.

Classic Surfboard

I don't think George O'Brien made a surfing movie, so these two photos may be an examples of the "stars at leisure" genre of publicity pictures.  That board would be worth a fortune if it's still around.

 

Day of the Derriere - Surf Bums

It's time for a Day of the Derriere, and our men are surfers showing us their bums.

Does that make them surf bums?

This is a nice crowd scene, but the water looks too sloppy for surfing.
