Pointer

Sometimes nice things come in small packages . . . or even with small packages.

9471

Poor recruit 9471.  When his buddy came out of the photo room and told him
to stick his chin out and pull his belly in, he got it backwards.

1965

Maybe it was cold when this photo of an archer was made in 1965.

Alternating Al Urban, starting with David Asnis

For Wednesday, I'm alternating nude and semi-nude photos of Al Urban, with all but the final two being pairs of the same models.  We start with an unabashed David Asnis and his small one.

Did Al Urban have a thing for "small ones?"

Bob Mizer of AMG has been famously quoted as saying, "Al Urban has made a good living for years photographing men with the smallest dicks in New York."  Although an examination of Mr. Urban's portfolio might well make us think so, there's no real proof the he went out of his way to accomplish that.  We start today's series with a rather stiff and formally posed Ludwig Shusterich.

Al Urban took publicity and magazine photos for a number of competitive bodybuilders, and this unknown model certainly might have been one.  I have searched unsuccessfully to figure out who he might have been.  The oil here is a bit excessive, but the man and the photo impress well.
Edited to add:  Frequent behind the scenes blog collaborator and contributor Bryan B. sent me an email identifying this model as Louis Abele, and that's right.  A version of this photo with painted in white trunks made the cover of Strength and Health magazine in 1940.  Thanks, Bryan!

I've featured at least one other photo of Larry Hedges in the past, and if you look at it,
you'll know that it's not just the angle of the photo that makes him look "small" here.

Our second unknown Al Urban model of the series appears to be practicing for drama class.

I can't do another Al Urban "small one" series without including handsome David Asnis.
It's worth repeating that it was Mr. Asnis, a New York fashion model at the time,
who convinced Al Urban to get serious about photographing male nudes in the late 1930s.

This is Rene Mansuy without his posing strap.  His stance seems to say,
"You wanted to see the whole package, so here it is!" Uh, such as it is.

I already had this photo in my collection, but the always helpful Larry K. informed me independently that the LIFE Archive picture is Marine Boot Camp, 1951, by Mark Kaufmann.
These guys seem to be turning in their civilian clothes and hadn't made it to the barber just yet.

More small ones

I get a lot of requests for guys with "small ones," but I get more likes and comments for big ones.
In any case, it's been a while, so today is all about small ones.
We start with Dick Spero by Bruce of LA.

Eddie Gaglio posed against a column that may have once
belonged to Mae West in this Lon of New York photo.

I obtained this photo of Marv Olson without a photographer's name,
but he was known to work for Russ Warner.

Frenchman Jean Ferrero took this photo of Jack Barclay.

This looks like a Bob Mizer AMG rooftop shot,
but I don't know the model.

Over the Top Again, Part 1 - Naked Men with Hands over Head

Revisiting the over the top section of my 1890-1920 photos today,
starting with this German photo that ticks several theme boxes.

This guy never shows his face in the photos I have of him.
Was he shy?  Embarrassed about something?

Small Ones by Al Urban

Bob Mizer of AMG was once said,  "Al Urban made a living for a years photographing men with the smallest dicks in America."  While it may have been a bit of an exaggeration, there is some truth to the statement, as you'll see in today's series.  This model is unknown.
