Today is Roy Blakey day, and we start with a beautifully lighted photo of Richard Christopher.

 

'Fro

The Afro hairstyle was still going strong when Roy Blakey shot this one in 1973.

 

Art

This one is art, pure and simple.

 

Cover

While not in the same league as Mr. Blakey's work for Honcho, Mandate, and 

After Dark, this cover for a New York gay magazine does have its charm.

 

Perspective

The perspective on this image is a bit odd, but I like it.

 

Fire Island Pines

If you click on the Roy Blakey label at right and scroll back a bit, you'll see a frontal nude 

of this model that I posted last year.  Only recently did I learn that it was part of a major 

piece in Honcho in 1980.  Today I am posting the rest of the group of photos.

 

Technique

I have no idea what technique Roy Blakey used to make this, but I like it.

 

Mystery

The ombre lighting gives this one an air of mystery.

 

Color

Roy Blakey's color work in Honcho is considered some of the best

for both the artist and the magazine.

Closing the set with a repeat post from seven years ago

that harkens to Leonardo DaVinci.

 

Roy Blakey - Variety

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Roy Blakey expanded his horizons beyond dancers and stage actors.  

His work began to feature more masculine models and he pushed his style boundaries somewhat, 

even going so far as to do photo sets for Honcho, Mandate, and After Dark.  Today I will feature 

a mix of both his newer and previous styles with emphasis on the new.  The picture 

above appeard in a 1980 French magazine called.Des Hommes Des Reves

 

Lynes Influence?

The cropping here reminds me of George Platt Lynes, and it marks 

something of a departure from Roy Blakey's usual style.

 

Hands and Chest

The hands and hairy chest really stand out on this Roy Blakey model.

 

Honcho I

This Honcho centerfold from the early 1980s showed a shift in Roy Blakey's style.

 

Darryl Robinson

I find this 1971 photo of dancer Darryl Robinson to be quite striking.

 

Gigolos

Roy Blakey published a somewhat edgy coffee table book called Gigolos in 1981.

I was not able to find a name for this bearded model.

This 1981 photo shows a return to Roy Blakey's early style,

but the double peekaboo is a new element.
