Sculpture

It's been a while since we had a day of sculpture on the blog, and we start this series with 

the first of three statues of Hercules in the group.  (Yes, that's a lot, but he's very good looking.  

And besides, I can't help it if he shows up in every third slot at the classical sculpture museums.)  

He's shown, somewhat unusually, as a youth in this version.

 

Seed sower

I think this fellow is sowing seed.

 

Poseidon

This is a different version of a statue of Poseidon that I posted

 the very first week I moved from tumblr to Google Blogger.

 

Hercules II

Here we have Hercules fighting Achelous turned into a huge snake.  I once killed a rattlesnake 

with a rock, but the rock was much larger than this, and the snake much smaller.

 

Staff

I found this man with a staff on some random website with no info.

 

Modern, I think

I know nothing about this one, but I think it is fairly modern.

 

Disc

I like the way the photographer lined up the shot of this discus athlete.

Both his eyes and the disc are coming straight at us.

 

Hercules again

Hercules is handling a different kind of snake this time.

 

Hermes?

I think this is a tastefully staged and lighted statue of Hermes.

 

Dave Martin Day

I can't seem to get enough of the amazing work of Dave Martin, so here we go with another series.  

As usual there will be a mix of seaside, studio, and college man types.  We start with Paul Dixon 

in the first of four photos made in rocky locales around the Bar Area.

 

Ray

Some collectors label this photo of Bruce Sien Ray Christopher (see below) as unattributed,

but I'm inclined to go along with those who say it's by Dave Martin.

 

Chuck

We are accustomed to seeing Dave Martin models with sports props.  After all, a large number of his models were college athletes.  Chuck Tyson, however, looks older, leaner, and meaner that most.

 

Bruce

A pensive Bruce Sien is sitting on an uprooted stump.

 

Kevin

Dave Martin didn't use swords or columns as much as some physique photographers,

but he put them to good use in this picture of Kevin Hall.

 

Gary

The third rocky bayside photo of the day is nicely different.

The model is the very handsome Gary Dexter.

 

Bud

I've posted almost three dozen photos of Bud Counts,

but somehow missed this one by Dave Martin until now.

 

Charlie

Charlie Wall seems to be flexing with one arm 

and playing imaginary castanets with his other.

Our fourth Dave Martin rocky shoreline photo of the day features Jerry Baxter.

Jay Holt did a memorable photo session for Dave Martin

 in a Bay Area motel room, and he looked great in every picture.

 

Waterside fun

Today we look at some men having fun around the water,

starting with five happy fellows on a dock.

I think this is a scene from a 1960s nudist resort.

There's a lot going on here.  We've got a guy picking his nose, two wrestlers, 

two guys drying off, a fellow fumbling with his long johns, and a man tying a knot.

Today's theme is the Boston Blackie mustache, aka pencil thin.

We start with Michael Craver by Douglas of Detroit.

Worth another look

I originally posted this one as part of a nudist duo series.  Only one has 

a Boston Blackie mustache, and the other guy is the real attraction here.

Here we have yet another uncurated photo that I snatched from the dying days of tumblr.

I feel like I should know who the handsome model is, but I'm drawing a blank.

 

Magnum, P.I.

This one looks like the guy who played Higgins on Magnum P.I.

Too bad he doesn't look like Tom Selleck.

Although I know nothing about this model or the photographer,

I somehow get a "shifty" vibe.  Looks 1970-ish.

 

Gerhard Riebicke Day

Our Friday series features the work of German photographer Gerhard Riebicke.

We start with a man on tiptoes with a javelin behind his back.

 

Ball

This is the first of four Riebicke photos in todays series featuring men with balls.

 

Which is it?

Are they throwing or catching the ball?

 

Medicine Ball

Do athletes still throw medicine balls around?

 

No clue

Although I don't have a clue as to exactly what this guy is doing,

he's in good shape and the stop action photography is good.

 

Snowballs

 This is a photo I posted almost five year ago without knowing it was by Riebicke.

Considering the season, it's worth a repeat.

Duhhhhh . . .

Our model here seems to be having trouble with whatever it was that he was doing.

The looks says, "I know I'm not getting this right."

 

Mud bath

Riebicke's model here is being hosed off from behind following a mud bath.

This spear chucker is from 1928.

 

Jump!

Our last Riebicke photo has a man whom our photographer caught in mid-jump.

The technical difficulty of this would have been daunting.

 

Derriere derby delightfully delivered by AMG

It's been a long time since we had a day of the derriere around here, so today we will look at some AMG photos that should make the Bum Brigade happy.  We start with Jim Paris.

"Ben" was the only note that came with this picture from that famous rooftop corner.

I don't even know which one is Ben, never mind what the other's name might be.
