Western Photography Guild - Stray Domestic Scenes

Don Whitman of Western Photography Guild in Denver photographed men in a variety of situations.  He even went so far with his domestically staged photos to do multiple series of models "At Home."

Today I'm featuring some possible strays from those sets for which I don't have complete series.

This is Terry Redpath in front of a fireplace.  Is that an Aztec calendar?

Based on the number of photos made of him, I'd say that Carter Lovisone was one of Don Whitman's favorite models.  There are lots and lots of WPG photos of him.

Paul Labriola is headed upstairs here.  Whitman photographed 

nude men in literally every part of the house

Marc Arno seems to be fiddling with one of those little TVs from 70's.

He posed for Don Whitman in the studio, outdoors, and in domestic situations.

Christopher Coe posed in front of someone's commemorative plate collection in this Don Whitman/WPG photo.  Is is just me, or does he have a blank look on his face?

Men in Boats

It's men in boats today, starting with a Bum Brigade spedial.

This guy seems intently focused on paddling to wherever it is he's going.

I think this is from a ca. 1970 nudist magazine.  Those sunglasses look odd.

Mr. Scumbeast said this was a lonely German in a rubber raft.

This was a viewer submission from my old tumblr blog, and it came with no info.

It looks like Von Gloeden's work, but I don't have it in that file.  Anyone recognize the watermark?

Dave Martin Day, Part 2 - Semi-nudes

.  In my years of collecting, I've noticed that Dave Martin didn't do as many posing strap or semi-nudes as his contemporaries, despite the legal difficulties of doing otherwise.  Nonetheless, I have more than enough examples for Part 2 of Dave Martin Day.  We start with Ben Cartor from 1955.

Dave Martin used the Golden Gate as a backdrop on multiple occasions, 

including this one featuring Dick Woodward

John Silva did some memorable work modeling for Dave Martin, and this is a good example.

I've been terribly neglecting you underwear fanciers lately, so here's

Dave Martin Day, Part 1 - Nudes Outdoors

Dave Martin is best known for his nude photos of college athletes and his penchant for documenting their favorite sports and hobbies.  In the first half of a Dave Martin double feature, I will post outdoor photos of some of his less well known models.  We start with Walt Mince in a very distinctive pose.

Dave Martin had a knack for staging photos in natural settings, 

and this one of Jack Brent is a good example.

Stan Reed and Bob Johnson appear here in an unusual Dave Martin duo shot.  

For some reason, he only rarely photographed more than one man at a time.

His square shoulders, triangular upper body, and flexing pose make this 1955 Martin 

photo of Doyle Brewer a true classic example of the physique genre.

Roy Lang's expression gives an air of easy self-confidence in this Dave Martin photo.

Prisoners of War

I am reluctant to post nude photos of war prisoners because they were sometimes mistreated and often not able to consent to having their photos made, something that could probably be said about any number of military nude photos.  I do make exceptions, however, for images where the men appear to be well treated and not in any obvious distress.  All but one of today's images, including a movie, were kindly forwarded to me by fellow Hawaii resident Larry K., a diligent and generous researcher.  We start with some German prisoners at a transit camp in Bourg Leopold, Belgium.  The date was January 20, 1945 and the photographer was Sgt. Silverside of the British Army.

I think I lost some of Larry's notes on this photo from the Imperial War Museum 

because all I have on it is "1917 at Varnita, Romania."  They may not even be prisoners.

Not many know it, but the British sent troops to help the hapless Italians in World War I.

Larry K.'s source says that these men are Austro-Hungarian prisoners of the British being 

allowed to get a bath in a stream.  Some even seem to have soap and wash cloths, 

and one guy in the background may actually be having a quick swim.

Larry K. found this movie clip of Russian prisoners being processed by their Austro-Hungarian captors.  They are getting haircuts for louse control, and their lice infested uniforms are either being burned or disinfected.  Although not shown here, I have stills similar to this that show crotch haircuts.

This is the only post today that wasn't provided by Larry K.  It is from the Australian 

War Memorial and shows a clandestine photo taken in a Singapore prison not long after the British-Australian forces in Malaya surrendered to the Japanese in 1942.  I can't bring myself to post 

the photos of these men when they were liberated three years later.  It was that bad.

Beefy Men Day, Part 2 - Vigeland's Frogner Park Installation

Gustav Vigeland (1869-1943) was a Norwegian sculptor who is best known for his massive body of work in a single installation in Frogner Park, Oslo.  (He also designed the Nobel Prize medal, fwiw.)  Here is his wiki:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gustav_Vigeland

Most of these works are men on the beefy side, so they will be the art portion of our double feature.

A number of Vigeland's statues involve burly men with babies, and this is one

 of the more conventional.  There's one with a guy punting a baby like a football.

Although bronze is by far the most common medium in the 

Frogner Park installation, there are some stone works as seen here.

Vigeland's Frogner Park works appear all over the internet,

but there is little or no curation.  I'd love to know what this one is about.

This Vigeland statue reminds me of the day my Uncle Sonny taught his twin sons to swim in my grandfather's irrigation pond.  I was there, and we all survived it somehow.

Beefy Men Day, Part 1 - Physique Models on the Bulkier Side

Beef is on the menu for our Friday double feature.  While most of the physique photographers of the 1940-1965 golden era of the genre got their start with bodybuilders, they didn't often focus on men who seem bulked up.  Today, we will see five who did, starting with Bill Lamm by Bruce of LA.

I couldn't do a beefy series without Keith Stephan.

Melvin Wells, photographed here by Lon of New York, barely qualifies as beefy, but his body is so well developed along natural lines that I had to include him.

Jim French of Colt Studio seems to have been something of a groundbreaker in terms of featuring beefy men in his male nudes.  This is Harley Cantrell, probably not his real name.

Bud Counts is often included in lists of the biggest and beefiest men in physique photography, 

but I found out he was only 5'8".  Well, he's still pretty beefy.  Photo by Dave Martin.

Roy Blakey Nudes

Roy Blakey was a Holiday on Ice performer who had a second career photographing male nudes.Tristan Berry here posed for him on September 17, 1971.

I can't find a name for this Blakey model.

Roy Blakey didn't often photograph more than one man at a time,

but when he did, he did it well.

John Converse posed for this Roy Blakey photo in 1975.

Blakey specialized in photographing dancers,

and I have a strong feeling this is one of them.

Tattoo You Day, Part 2 - Guys with their pants on

Part two of tattoo day starts with four guys who, based on their pants,

I think had to be sailors.  A couple of them are having a bad hair day.

These guys must have been stokers or boiler operators, given the location of the photo.

Is it just me, or do some of them have matching tattoos?

Surely the hefty guy at left must have something going on below the waist that he would like to show us, and it need not be a tattoo to make most of you chubby chasers happy, either.

This curious photo shows two tattooists working on one guy while two fully clothed 

young men look on. I suppose the tattooist at left is nearly naked to 

show off the work on himself, which may be the other guy's.

This is the smallest of our tattooed groups,

but I like the fact that they are relaxing real sailors.

Tattoo You Day, Part 1 - Physique Models Nude

It's a tattoo double feature today, starting with nude physique models.

This unknown (to me anyhow) is by Pat Milo.

For some reason, I think this surly looking tattooed guy sitting on a concrete floor in his black socks is an AMG photo.  But then again I've had Bob Mizer's roof on my mind a lot lately.  So maybe not.

This is probably my all time favorite tattoo photo, so you'd think I know who the models and photographer are, but I don't.  Anyone?
Edited to add:  JamesIV informs us in the comments that it's Tico Patterson at right, something I really should have known.  The other handsome guy is still a mystery.

Ralph Kelly took this unusually posed photo of Ray Cox.

The catalog number (rather unfortunately located if you ask me) should be a clue as to the photographer, but several used similar systems in the classic physique era.

Archers who aren't the usual physique model suspects

Today I'm posting some nude archers whom (with one possible exception) I don't think 

were physique models.  We start with this middle aged nudist pointing out the target.
