Skinny Dipping Day

Today is skinny dipping day, and we start with some men in a forest stream.

Getting undressed

As best as I can tell, these men are stripping off for a swim.

 

Nice group

The guy at right doesn't care if he's photographed full monty, and I'm not sure if the man 

second from left on the platform even knows he's showing off his family jewels.

 

Budd Lake

This is one of my alltime favorite skinny dipping pictures.  It's from Budd Lake, 

New Jersey around 1940.  And you are quite welcome, Leroy.

 

Pebble beach

This skinny dipper is walking along a pebble beach.

 

Bird?

Is the guy at left flipping the bird at the cameraman?

 

Fun

I'm not sure exactly what they're doing, but the seem to be having fun.

 

GIs

These men are American soldiers on a black sand beach in New Guinea.

 

Germans

I don't know if the star of our final skinny dipping photo just got depantsed, or if the other men are just making sure he faces the camera.  The group is from Mr. Scumbeast's WWII German collection.

 

1930s Day

It's 1930s day, and we start with an FKK sausage fest.

 

Nine pence for Superman

Superman Magazine from the UK could be had for nine pence in 1933.  I love how they listed 

an article about posing in the nude with one on how to prevent sunburn immediately below it.

 

Possible Earle Forbes

Some sources attribute this to Earle Forbes, and some say photographer unknown.

Unfortunately, no one has even a hunch about the handsome model's name.

 

Carl Trees

Horst P. Horst took this photo of fine looking Carl Trees in 1937.

 

Pierre and "Bush"

My source has this labeled "Pierre Cotier and 'Bush', 1936."

 

Ainu Men

In the 1930s some anthropologists visited and photographed the Ainu people of far northern Japan.  Ainu are a very distinct ethnic group who do not resemble Japanes much at all.  The fellow above 

had a nice happy trail leading down to that wraparound cloth.  The man below has short hair and a fundoshi style loincloth, both likely borrowed from encroaching Japanese culture.

 

Doubtful

A reputable vintage resale website dated this at 1930, but I have my doubts.

The hairstyle looks later than that to me.

 

Unknown

Both the model and photographer for this 1932 photo are unknown.

 

Josef Manger

This is Josef Manger, winner of the gold medal for heavy class weightlifting at the 1936 Olympics.

He apparently was not a Nazi and made friends with many foreign athletes.

 

Elio Luxardo

The final image in our 1930s set is by Elio Luxardo, an interesting Italian photographer whose work I only recently discovered.  If there is any interest, I have enough to do a full series of his work.

 

19th Century Men

It's 19th Century day, and we start with the first of two items in the series by pioneering Scottish photographers.  This is Athlete by Dr. John Adamson from 1850.  He's beautiful.

 

Hard to Date

My source dated this at 1855, but it looks more like 1885 to me.

 

1870

This is supposed to be from a 3D stereopticon set.  Did they have those in 1870?

 

1853

In the very early days of photography, some clever folks photographed art, particularly sculpture.  No worries about a statue staying still for those impossibly long exposures.  It is a relief of men hunting wild boar, and one of the hunters has been injured.  Both the photographer and the original sculptor are unknown.  Disclosure:  I removed severe yellowing from this one.

 

Czechs 1876

My source labeled this as "Czech Choir, 1876."  I think they look more like athletes, and some checking led to the Sokol Athletic Club, a group I featured here a few weeks ago in a later photo.

 

Igout

Louis Igout should have called this 1880 item "Woe Is Us."

 

Dr. George Bell

As a proud Scottish-American, I was thrilled to find this 1845 photo of Dr. George Bell by David Octavius Hill of Edinburgh.  The new science of photography had its place in the flourishing

 Scottish art scene of that era, and Mr. Hill was a true pioneer.  Below, Dr. Bell dressed 

and looking very good.  Both photos are in the National Gallery of Scotland.

An online archivist dates this Von Gloeden item to the 1890s.

 

Muscles

We get some nice looking muscles in this one from 1898.

 

Mountain Man

Our final 19th Century photo is a mountain man drying off 

after washing his face somewhere in the American West, 1880.
