Hairy Guys with Towels

For Tuesday, we look at some hairy guys toweling off.

This is the best I could do with this category for my friends in the Bum Brigade.

Only the guy at left is particularly hairy, but both have considerable appeal.  And did he shower while wearing that watch with a wide leather band?  He doesn't even look slightly wet.

I have a suspicion that this is post-1975,

but the thematic appeal made me post it.

Edited to add:  Two comments say that this is Bruno,

something is should have easily have known, but didn't.

This model in the woods looks familiar, 

but I can't remember his name.

Today's bonus shot is G-rated, but worth a look.

Our Monday series features the winners of nudist trophies.

I think this guy must have won for his good looks.

Last year I posted a nudist all-male beauty pageant photo made in front of a decrepit, 

rough-hewed Western looking building, and this guy must have won.

I really don't know what to make of these two,

but they managed to win somehow.

You knew we weren't going to get through this without

 somebody winning a trophy for volleyball, and here he is.

Finishing the series with a somewhat furry guy holding a trophy 

that looks a lot like a 1950's era lamp my grandmother used to have.

Dave Martin Double Feature, Part 2 - Derrieres by Dave

Dave Martin came into his own as a photographer of male nudes in the post World War II era.

He fearlessly took full frontal pictures at a time when it could land him in jail.  And it did at least once, however briefly.  Despite his legal problems, he prospered and succeeded in getting some very masculine models to pose for photos they had to know were pitched to gays.  Derriere shots form a relatively small portion of his portfolio, and I am featuring some of my favorites in today's second Dave Martin series.  We start with this woodland photo of Ed Siemens

Jay Holt did a memorable photo shoot for Dave Martin in a motel room

This reclining derriere shot is beautiful, and Jay seems to be having a good time.

I'm pretty sure Jay was a college football player, but I can't find Dave's notes on him in my files.

Aside from his penchant for college athletes, military men, and first responders,

Dave Martin was known for his frequen use of some rocky seaside locations around the Bay Area.

This shot of Gene Stanley is a good example of a rare derriere photo taken at one such spot.

I've featured a lot of photos of Bud Counts over the years, 

but this one by Dave Martin is by far my favorite derriere shot of him.

Dave Martin Double Feature, Part 1 - Unknown Models

Dave Martin is one of my favorite photographers from the golden era of physique work for a lot of reasons.  One of those is that he not only identified more of his models than most of his peers, but he also identified their sports and other interests, mostly on hand written cards.  The first half of today's Dave Martin double features shows some of his unidentified models, most of which are also thematic twofers.  This young man perched on an end table should tick some boxes in the bush department.  Mr. Martin is shown in the inset which was added by an unknown past collector.

Dave Martin didn't use props all that often, but when he did, they tended to be either sports equipment or just a simple staff.  This makes sense on two levels.  First, Dave specialized in college athletes, so it would be natural to play off the sports angle.  Secondly, the staff was widely used in the 1940's and 50's as a reference to Classical art and 19th Century academic drawings.  I should note that Dave also worked with a lot of military men, policemen, and fire fighters.  One of the all time great physique models, Norman Tousley, was an Alameda, California fireman.

The devilish grin on this reclining model makes me want to know more about him.

Dave Martin used a number of African-American models whom he identified in his records.

Unfortunately, this handsome man is unknown.  I have to wonder if he was active duty military

and didn't want to be named for obvious reasons.

This unknown model presents a classic 1950's pose and haircut.

Playgirl Men of 1974

1974 was a great year for Playgirl, especially given that the now venerable magazine was only a couple of years into its run.  All of today's photos came from that year, and most of them made the later Best of Playgirl compilation editions.  We start with Garrison Wayne.

Kenyon Cox, 1856-1919

A couple of weeks ago, I featured some art by Allyn Cox and mentioned that his father was also a well known muralist and painter.  This weeks Friday art features the senior Cox's work, starting with this study for "Science," a mural he installed in the Iowa State Capitol.

This was a study for a large mural done by Kenyon Cox in the Iowa State Capitol.

He placed a strategic ribbon across the crotch in the final version.

Kenyon Cox's ability to excellently represent the 

male form comes through even in this rather rough sketch.

1882 is the date for this Kenyon Cox drawing of an African-American male.  That was the same year he moved from Paris back to New York after studying in Europe for several years.

This undated sketch was donated to a museum by Kenyon Cox's son Allyn,

but their usually well curated website had no information on it other than Allyn's date of donation.

The style appears to be rather modern, suggesting it might have been from late in Kenyon's career.

Seated Physique Models

Today's R-rated series is focused on seated models photographed 

by some of my favorite photographers.  We start with Max Wolf by Pat Milo.

This is the only photo in today's series for which I have no model's name.

I recognize the background as one used by Bob Mizer of AMG, 

but I really hope someone can help me with the model ID.

This photo of Eric Ryder by Don Whitman of Western Photography Guild does not conform to Mr. Whitman's usual style, but I have seen it attributed to him by two reputable sources.

I find it to be quite artistic with the soft focus actually adding to the appeal.

I never get tired of looking at Keith Stephan, and this shot by Bruce of LA only reinforces that opinion.  This photo came to me unattributed, but that corrugated metal backdrop 

and the rug both appear in multiple works by Bruce, so I feel safe in declaring it his.

I came across this while researching a recent series about men leaning on rocks,

but couldn't use it because there's no rock and he's partially seated.  See how arcane I can be?

Hippies

Today's theme is hippies, and we start with a guy coming out of his Levis. 

This guy's hair isn't that long, but the beard and the necklace say "hippie."

Hippies called themselves individualists, but they 

looked similar and did a lot of group activities.

This burly hippie type did some modeling jobs and appears 

in a number of nude photo series in the early 1970's.

I don't know why, but a lot of the hippies I knew loved to climb trees.

Bruce at the Beach, Part 2

Manny Cabral starts off the G-rated portion of our Bruce at the Beach double feature.

Bruce did a very impressive photo shoot at the beach with Bob McCune,

and this is just one of several great photos from that day.

I wish I knew who this rather pleasant looking model was.

This is not the greatest photo of Steve Reeves, but it is by Bruce and it is at Muscle Beach.

Bruce at the Beach, Part 1 - Nudes

It's a Bruce of LA double feature today, and both halves are beach photos.

I was surprised at how few fully nude beach shots were in my Bruce collection, and then 

I realized that nudity wasn't allowed at beaches easily accessible from LA in the 1950's.

We start with Joe Tiffenbach in a rather straightforward pose.

Edited to add:  This classic photo caused me to research Joe Tiffenbach's life,

 and it turned out to be quite interesting.  He will be the subject of 

my first "whatever happened to . . . " series coming soon.

Our Bum Brigade twofer by Bruce features what I presume to be the same unknown model.

Edited to add:  Two knowledgeble guys in the comments say this is Eddie Padilla.

Ben Montgomery strikes an unusual pose on the beach for Bruce.  Svengali anyone?
