Scott Masters, Second Series

I've located some more photos by Scott Masters, who is better known for his work in gay porn movies than for his stills.  Many, but not all, of today's shots are from Action Line magazine in 1969-70.  The cover man was Dan Roberts, and I have more to say about those phone numbers later.

 

Rick

There is no hint of a last name for Rick, a Scott Masters model

of whom I have about half a dozen additional photos.

 

Bob Parkinson

I cropped this picture of Bob Parkinson from a montage,

the remainder of which I will post in a later series.

 

Jim Jon

Note the phone number under the picture above.  Action Line magazine included numbers for nearly all the models, but it wasn't clear exactly what calling the number would get you.  The name of the publication probably says it all, and we have to wonder how well that went over with the authorities.  The model here is only known as Jim Jon, sometimes Jim John, and he appears above without the large chest tattoo we see below.  He must have spent the money for the modeling session on tattoos.

 

Tony Ligon

Scott Masters published photos of this model under the names Tony Ligon and Danny Pike.

 

"Con?"

Listed in the text as "Con" with no last name, this model was published under the names Don Landrum, Don Kennedy, and Brian Norton.  Why they used none of those above is beyond me. 

 

Don

Don was the only name given for this model in Action Line magazine,

but my research indicates that he might have gone by Don Tracy.

 

Tom Darrin

This serious looking fellow is Tom Darrin, sometimes spelled Darren.

 

Dave Shawn

I'm ending the Scott Masters series as we began, with a mirror shot.

This time the model is a happy looking Dave Shawn.

 

Men in Gym Shorts

Rich F. of Daytona requested a gym shorts series, and I am happy to oblige.

We start with a guy on the gym steps who seems to be wearing boxing shoes.

 

Go Trojans!

These two athletes are Marlin and Mike McKeever, twins who were 

on the University of Southern California Trojans football team in 1959.

 

Shot put

I've always had a thing for shot putters.  As I've said before, I like 'em beefy.

 

Duo in white

I think these two stepped outside the gym to have their picture made.

 

The lack of uniforms makes me think this 1940-ish group is a scrub basketball team.

There's quite an array of shorts here, mostly on the skimpy side.

 

Redskin by Silk

This chunky fellow was a member of the 1938 Washington Redskins as photographed by George Silk.  Can you imagine a current day pro athlete drinking out of a communal water dipper?

 

Locker room

This scene is literally set in a locker room.  Wish I knew more about it.

 

Not weightlifting

At first glance, I thought these two were lifting barbells, but they're not.  The bars are slotted

 into frames bolted onto the gym floor.  Must be some sort of dynamic tension exercise.

 

Relay Team?

These guys were probably in a relay race,

but there's no baton in sight.

 

1958

Our last gym shorts photo came labeled simply "High School, 1958."

Is it just me, or does he look too old to be in high school?

 

Nature Boys

Friday's theme is men in nature, starting with our only beach entry of the day.

 

Interesting shadow

The shadow on the model's arm looks like a thistle,

 one of the national symbols of Scotland.

 

Washed out

I find the composition here to be quite good,

but I wish the model weren't so washed out.

 

Older

Both the model and the photo here look older than those in today's other posts.

 

Grin

This grinning guy is from 1968.

 

Over the shoulder

"Is someone following me?  I certainly hope so."

 

Heartland?

This reminds me of some of Bruce of LA's Heartland work,

but I have only a hunch to go on.

 

Rough hewn

This model has that rough hewn look and some notable tan lines.

 

Blanket

This fellow brought his blanket along.  Maybe he's planning a picnic.

 

Russ

Our last nature boy is the only one in today's set that I have 

any information for, and that's only a name, Russ Peterson.

 

Navy Day

Today we visit some guys getting naked, mostly bathing, 

on their navy ships.  Lots of splashing in this one.

 

Blurry

This one is a bit blurry, but you can still see some interesting bits.

 

Fire hose

These sailors are using a fire hose for a shower on deck.

 

Salonika

AA Gunner

This World War II photo of an antiaircraft gunner washing up next to his gun is a classic.

I'm not sure, but I think it may be from the LIFE Archive.

 

Babe and Leo

This is Babe and Leo getting a shower on a ship off Costa Rica.

 

Changing room

I think this changing room was at a landside U.S. Navy recreation facility.

 

Bath on deck

Lots of beef and a huge anchor chain visible here.

 

Scumbeast item

This was item number 18 in one of Mr. Scumbeast's sailor sets.

He called it "sailors doing something naked."

 

Observers

There appear to be two fully dressed sailors keenly observing the on deck bathing here.

 

Troy Saxon Day

Troy Saxon is today's featured photographer, and we start with model Donnie Kay. 

 Although somewhat starkly lighted, I like the aura of masculinity in this photo.

 

Mike North

That stump looks fake, but that's probably not what you're looking at in this photo of Mike North.  

We'll see another model with a directional name later in today's set.

 

Lefty Ellis

An intense looking Lefty Ellis appears in the first 

of three photos in today's series with the same prop.

 

Jimmy Parsons

Jimmy Parsons seems to be staring right through us in this shot.

More about the prop in a later post today.

 

Mac Johnson

I wonder if Troy Saxon was inspired by Don Whitman of Western Photography Guild 

when he made this photo of Mac Johnson.  Color is pretty rare in Mr. Saxon's body of work.

 

Jimmy South

Jimmy South has that "I know what you want" look here.

 

"Sarge"

Although not listed on this magazine page, "Sarge" was the nickname 

of the very attractive Jim Lindsey, sometimes spelled Lindsay.

 

Tom Hawes

Tom Hawes looks a bit perplexed in this Troy Saxon picture.  The "staff" he is holding 

appears to be a frou-frou curtain rod popular in the early to mid 60s.

 

Troy Saxon himself?

This photo came to me labeled only "Troy Saxon," and that left me wondering if it is by him or of him.  The setting somewhat matches some of the photos of Mr. Saxon in my collection, but it also resembles some of the places where he worked as a photographer.  Anybody know?  Speculation welcome.
