Military Underwear Day

It's military men in their underwear day.  We start, appropriately enough, 

with some guys at an induction center waitng to be weighed and measured.

 

Briefs and a T-shirt

I can't tell if he's getting dressed or undressed, but I like him.

 

All boxers

 

These three are all wearing boxers in front of one of those ubiquitous WWII tents.

Their hair looks more like Korea era, though, so the tent could be a holdover.

 

Best part forward

You've heard of putting your best foot forward, right?  Well this chunky guy is putting

 his best other feature forward and wearing a "W" tank top/  Washington fan?

 

Color

Our only color shot of the day looks like Vietnam era, 

and one of the GIs is looking at a Bugs Bunny comic book.

 

Tobruk 1941

Are those tight boxers or some other sort of underwear that the well built water bearer

 is wearing?  The scene is Tobruk in 1941 from the Australian War Museum.

 

Putting on a show

The guy at center seems accustomed to putting on a show.

 

Friendly

These two seem more than a little bit friendly.  They 

even both have their army boots under the same bed.

 

Showing off

Mr. Scumbeast contributed this one to my old tumblr blog, desdribing it as an American soldier lounging outside his barracks in women's underwear.  That must have been an interesting base, 

but I have to suggest that he refine his footwear styling for even greater success.

 

Water fight

Our last military underwear photo of the day shows some GIs having fun in the barracks bathroom.  I hope they had the good sense to stage a wet T-shirt and drawers contest while they were at it.

Duo in their drawers

OK, I'll concede that they guy at left is above average in some ways,

but I had to include these two for their contrasting underwear styles.

Oh, and the pictures on the wall are interesting.

 

Jerry Colonna

Our first of two ordinary average guys in color is a Jerry Colonna lookalike in the snow.

Does that make him not be an ordinary average guy?  I don't think so.

 

Glum

This guy looks glum, but he has nothing to be ashamed of.

After all, he's just an ordinary average guy.

 

Nature boy

Somebody wrote "Nature Boy" in the family album

 under this ordinary average guys picture.

 

Quartet

Sometimes ordinary average guys get together to get naked 

and do funny things with their peckers . . . and each other.

 

Polaroid

I get a feeling that this one is a Polaroid.

I also get a feeling he's gay.

 

Did he know?

Sometimes these "sleeping beauty" (or in this case sleeping ordinary average guy)

 pictures are faked.  This time, it's hard to tell if it's for real or a put on.

 

Sheepish

The sheep is thinking,  "Oh, boy.  What is he gonna do next?"

 

Shoes, socks, and watch

Our last ordinary average guy is out for a stroll in the woods wearing just his

 shoes, socks, and a watch.  Oh, and there may be wire rimmed glasses.

 

Art Odds and Ends

Today I'm serving up a load of leftover art that didn't quite make some previous series.  

I'm posting them in what I believe to be chronological order, starting with this 

scupture that only had a note saying "Hermes with a Purse" attached to it.

 

Alonso

This academic drawing is by Juan Alonso from 1798.

 

Pisarro

Camille Pisarro did this charcoal of a hefty male model in 1858.

 

Visconti

Brazilian artist Eliseu Visconti painted this model in the studio with a second 

in the background.  Although officially undated, it is believed to be from about 1890.

 

Rohweder

Female Danish artist Bodil Rohweder created this academic painting about 1910.  Trained 

in an all female art school, it was only in the last year or two of her art education that 

women were allowed to work with fully nude male models, hence the date.

 

Vigeland

Here we have a black and white photo that's a stray from my Vigeland collection.  There are a 

number of father and son sculptures in that park in Oslo, and this is one of the more benign ones.  

There are others where he is juggling the kids and even drop kicking one of them.

 

Mid-Century

This undated, untitled, and unaccredited painting was labled as simply Mid-20th  Century.

 

Delfau

Andre Delfau made this drawing in 1960.

1970s Trio of Artists

I found this interesting piece from the late 1970s on a German website.  It had a note

 attached which translates as:  Community work of John Grützke (b. 1937), 

Jan Peter Tripp (born 1945) and Arno Waldschmidt (born 1936).

I think it's three nude self portraits.

 

Angelo

Arthur Grossman painted Angelo in 1980.

 

Museum Quality Physique Photos

When I changed the direction of the blog and said I would be doing less physique photography, 

I didn't mean I was abandoning it entirely.  Today I will be posting ten photos from a variety of museums and one exclusive gallery.  While they aren't necessarily the images I would have chosen

 as the best of the artists, they are all quite good and deserving of their recognition.  We start with 

Bob Mizer of AMG and a picture of a cocky looking Joe Dallesandro that is now part of the photography collection at the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art.  

As Lou Reed put it:"Everybody had to pay and pay," including Mr. Mizer no doubt.

 

Douglas of Detroit

The Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art is a New York facility that focuses on gay art, culture, and history.  They have a small collection of physique photos, and I am including three from their collection today, starting with this shot of Neel Bate by Doug Juleff, aka Douglas of Detroit.

 

Dave Martin

The Stanford University Center for Art does not name the model in this Dave Martin 

photo from their collection.  Am I the only one who thinks it might be Mike Sill?

 

Bob Delmonteque

This self portrait of Bob Delmonteque is the second of three 

photos in today's series from the Leslie-Lohman Museum.

 

Jean Ferrero

Galerie Au Bonheur du Jour of Paris has been compared by some observers as equal to or even better than some museums in terms of their gay focused photo shows.  This picture of Rick Wayne by Jean Ferrero makes me think they were right.  I'll post more material from this source in the future.

 

Lon

Lon of New York, aka Alonzo Hanagan, shows up (along with his famous stained column) in no less a collection than that of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  Oddly, they don't name the model.

 

Antonio Arabia

In another item from the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art, we see a photo of an unknown model by Antonio Arabia III (1931-1993).  I hadn't heard of Mr. Arabia before, so I did some research and found out that he was not only a photographer, but a gay rights activist as well who lived most of his life in West Chester, Pennsylvania.  Interestingly, he inherited a bar from his father which became a venue for early rock and roll artists such as Chubby Checker and Bill Haley.

 

Karoll of Habana

Karoll of Havana, aka Luis Cuento, may not be a well known name to many of you, but his work is quite good and highly collectible.  Aside from having appeared in several prestigious gallery shows, this photo is also part of the Centro Culturo Hispanico de la Habana museum collection.

 

AMG-Mizer . . . again

Given the sheer volume of his work and it's influence, it should be no surprise that Bob Mizer of AMG showed up a second time in this series.  This G-rated, but still homoerotic, 1961 photo is in the Long Beach Museum of Art and features David Stubbs with David McCrady.

 

Kris

Chuck Renslow might be able to claim his own museum for his work at Kris Studio, 

and he would deserve it.  He founded the Leather Archives and Museum in Chicago, and while

 it understandably features a lot of his and his partner Etienne, there are other artists included. 

 For our purposes today, I'm using this excellent Kris photo of Thom Muscalino. 

 

Blacksmith

This image of a blacksmith is one of my alltime favorite Muybridge single frames.

He probably had no idea that people would marvel over him 135 years later.

 

Muybridge Single Frames

I've had a tendency over the years to post several panels at a time of images of Eadweard 

Muybridge's motion studies to give some indication of the flow of movement.  (I've 

even posted a few GIFs as well.)  Today, however, I'm putting up some of my 

favorite single frames, starting with a muscular young man putting the shot.

 

Graeco-Roman

Muybridge (or some knowledgeable curator) described the sequence this frame came from as "Graeco-Roman Wrestling."  It is often presented as a GIF, and I have featured a different still in the past.

 

Stretch

Although he looks like he's reaching for something,

this model has just thrown a large metal disc.

 

Log lifter

Lifting a log this time, my favorite Muybridge model is a beefy, balding middle aged man.

 

Farmer

This depicts a farmer mowing grass for hay with a scythe.  That funny little had shows up over and over again in Muybrigde's male nude work on a number of different models, but it obviously wasn't used all the time.  Does anyone know the purpose?  Guesses are fine.  I guess all the time.

 

Heaving a rock

Do I detect a bit of a grin on this handsome man heaving a 20 pound rock?

Muybridge was studying motion, but he sure managed to get some great muscle shots.

 

Another popular GIF frame

The GIF file of the sequence this frame comes from has justifiably made the rounds and been quite popular on the internet.  I find it nice to "stop and smell the roses" with this single image.

Oh, and I think the blacksmith at right is the guy shown singly earlier today.

 

Cricketeer

Muybridge preferred being called Saxon over English, and even changed the spelling

 of his name accordingly.  That being said, he couldn't help but include some very 

English cricket photos among his motion studies.  I think this one is quite nice.

 

Muybridge?

Our last photo of the day shows a man who might be Muybridge himself swinging a pick.

I have other photos of a fellow who looks just like this guy that are authenticated as such,
