Robert Mapplethorpe Day

I've been overdue for a second Robert Mapplethorpe series, so today is the day.
We start with Alan Lynes from 1979 in a somewhat bizarre shot.

Dancers

Robert Mapplethorpe made Two Men Dancing in 1984.
And yes, those are crowns they are wearing.

Eric

This photo called Eric from 1980 shows a George Platt Lynes influence.

Carleton

This is Carleton from 1988.

Dominick and Elliot

These guys are Dominick and Elliot from 1979, and it is far and away
my favorite photo of the day.  It is in the National Gallery of Scotland.
If you are ever in Edinburgh, go to that museum.  It is amazing!!!

Hell

This is A Season in Hell from 1983.

Already framed

No picture frame needed for this one.  It's already there.

Livingstone

All the info that came with this one was "Livingstone 1987."

Bathing Suit

Robert Mapplethrope called this 1983 photo Man in a Bathing Suit.

Robert Reed

This is Robert Reed from 1979.  I'm not the biggest Mapplethorpe fan,
but I find both the pose and the model's expression to be special.

Mapplethorpe

This is Scott Daley by Robert Mapplethorpe from 1979.  I just realized it's been a very long time
since I did a Mapplethorpe series, so do be surprised if one shows up shortly.

Robert Mapplethorpe

Robert Mapplethorpe was known for his self portraits, and I have included two.
The upper is dated 1972, the lower 1973, but I'm not certain about that.

Robert Mapplethorpe

Robert Mapplethorpe (1946-1989) was one of a generation of edgy new photographic artists who burst onto the scene in the 1970.  He pushed the envelope in almost every way you can think of.  Today, I am featuring some of his early work, starting with this 1972 self portrait.

Fire Island Pines

Robert Mapplethorpe discovered Fire Island like quite a few people did.  His new lover in 1972,
Sam Wagstaff, had a shared beach house and took him there.  Mapplethorpe photographed
Patti Smith, David Hockney and other notables on the island.  The fellow at the center of the
photo above is Scott Bromley, a successful architect and interior designer.

Whip

Mapplethorpe appropriated called this 1972 photo Whip.

Unknown

I found this unknown model unconvincingly dated at 1973.  I think the hairstyle doesn't seem right.

Selfie with Charles

It's said that Robert Mapplethorpe didn't set out to do a selfie with Charles,
but ended up in the picture and liked it that way.  From 1974.

Frank Diaz

This is Frank Diaz from 1975, and he was known as "the hottest Puerto Rican in New York."
Frank got into all the best discos and was invited to all the best parties.
