Day of the Derriere in the Locker Room

Saluting the ever loyal Bum Brigade with a full series of locker room derrieres.  They are all from the LIFE Archive and were either shared or explained by generous fellow Hawaii resident Larry.

We start with boxer Billy Conn as photographed by Sam Shere in 1946.  On an interesting side note, Shere was best known for his iconic photo of the airship Hindenburg crashing in flames.

This is the first of two photos in this series that I posted on my old tumblr without details.  Thanks to Larry, I know now that it is the Brooklyn Dodgers, taken on May 5, 1955 by Francis Miller.

P.S.  I still deeply covet that clock and want one of my own badly.

Grey Villet took this photograph labeled "Narvaez-Laguna Fight" in 1967 at Madison Square Garden.  I don't know if this is Narvaez or Laguna, but I'm pretty sure Albert the Belgian will like it.

I posted this interesting photo on my old tumblr without knowing its story.  Thanks to my friend Larry, I now know that this is from a 1936 squash championship at the Rockaway Hunt Club. 

The photographer was Walter Engel.

Carl Mydans took this photo at the Washington Redskins' Virginia training camp in 1938.

And I'd like to thank fellow Hawaii resident Larry once again for sharing today's images.

19th Century Danish Academic Art

Our Friday art series features 19th Century Danish academic art,

beginning with this piece by Vilhelm Hammershol.

This one was just labeled "Danish School."

This 1866 color academic painting is by Dane Wilhelm Pacht.

This came with the cryptic label "N.J. Led, Danish."

19th Century Artists Study Photos

Kicking off Friday art day with some 19th C. artists' study photos.

This one is by Hermann Heid, a photographer whose work sometimes is confused with that of Igout.

This is said to be an early work by Gaudenzio Marconi.

I really like the posing in this interesting photo by Durieu.

I did an Igout series just a few days ago, but I had to include him today

because I think is work is an important part of his era.

This is the only one of today's series for which I do not know the photographer.

It looks like a study for a fallen warrior Classical piece.

Sports Showers of Questionable Date

Today's series features some sports teams in or near the showers, but I'm pretty sure that at least some of them are past my usual arbitrary cutoff of 1975 for vintage.  I like them anyway.

The biggest difference between this undated photo 

and most modern ones of the type is the lack of tattoos.

Classic early 70's hair styles in this one.

Are those funny looking cloths some sort of back scrubbers?

Also, I don't like the partitions between the individual showers.  Full-on gang is better.

These guys look like military recruits, but the photo came from a reputable sports blog.

Hairy Day, Part 2

Part 2 of Hairy Day features some shirtless movie stars,

starting with Guy Madison in a studio publicity shot.

I think this is a publicity still of William Holden shaving on the set of a western.

Sean Connery always looked good in the movies, even well into his 70's.

Some fan magazine felt compelled to list George Montgomery's 

rather impressive "vital statistics."

Clint Walker seems to be getting directed on the set of Cheyenne.

Hairy Day, Part 1

It's fur day on the blog, and we'll start with the first 

of two hairy guys who also have low hangers.

This will undoubtedly send Albert and the Bum Brigade into paroxysms of joy.

Those boots remind me of a 1965 craze started by the Beatles.

Smoking is bad enough, but he's doing it in bed!

I can't tell if he's going for a zombie look or just deer in the headlights.

George Platt Lynes Nudes

Tuesday's series is by George Platt Lynes, and this is Ralph McWilliams from 1948.

Robert McVoy struck a somewhat dramatic pose in this 1939 photo by George Platt Lynes.

Lynes called this 1941 photo "Two Men in the Sand," 

and I think the guy at right is Charles "Tex" Smutney.

Our Bum Brigade special has something extra on offer,

and I'm not talking about the carpet.  This is sort of "in your face" for Lynes.

According to my source, Lynes photographed this unknown model in 1952, 

but the style looks a lot like some work he did around 1940.
Edited to add:  Tom confirms in the comments that this was indeed
from 1952 and adds that the model is Scott Douglas.

Snoggers

Smooching is our theme for Monday, starting with a good one for the fur fanciers.
I believe the guy on the left is Brad Peters, aka Jeff Woodward, aka Keith James.

I'm sure they like each other, but they're still in the warm-up phase.

Louis Igout, Part 2

Part 2 of Louis Igout Day features some almost nudes.  (There are surprisingly few of these in the rather large assortment of Igout photos extant.)  Anyway, we start with this dramatic pose.

I can't quite figure out the apparatus this model is pulling on.

Is it a rock on a rope?

One side of this photo of a reclining male seems to be overexposed.

I know he's probably meant to look introspective, 

but this model seems to be staring at this crotch.

Here's my favorite Igout model in a rare (for him, anyway) demure photo.

He looks like he's pulling on an imaginary sock.

Louis Igout Day, Part 1

Doing a Louis Igout (1837-1881) double feature today.  He was a contemporary of Gaudenzio Marconi, and both men produced albums of nude photos which were used by artists as a substitute for live models.  I've often wondered how these photographers acquired their male models because some of them look like working men making some money on the side.  Did they approach attractive men at labor exchanges and say,  "Hey, wanna make some easy money?"  And before you jump to conclusions, it should be noted that both photographers photographed women as well as men. 

          Louis Igout did a group of photos using this probably fake boulder as a prop.  I considered                 doing a series using only those images, but they get sort of boring after the first two or three.

The second boulder photo in today's group should please the Bum Brigade.

Today's twofer features a somewhat stocky model who is my personal favorite from Igout's stable.

This simple, but elegant, pose isn't the sort that would usually catch my eye,

but for some reason I find it quite fetching.
