I'm not sure, but I think those things at either side are used to help keep the model still.
Thanks for confirming, David. The reason you haven't seen them used is probably because they were mainly employed to allow the long exposures needed for much of 19th C. photography.
I'd agree regarding the support rods. Forming triangles with his limbs For some reason, I've never seen these in use.

DeleteAgain good point. Some crossover between supports for long exposures and model support.
