This one was made by pioneering French photographer Jean Louis Durieu in the 1850s.

  1. As ever, we have used a time machine. Superb physique.

    1. Isn't it, though!?!? I checked the authentication thoroughly on this one, because the technical quality is so good for the 1850's. Most of Durieu's other photos aren't nearly as clear.

  2. I love this one, the model and the pose. It really could have been taken today.

    1. Right. I'm surprised we don't see the pose more in modern work.

    2. To model in this pose for any length of time needs careful consideration. Putting most of the weight and corrective control of the torso on that straight left arm will soon hurt. Assuming this guy is a professional life model, and to achieve stillness for the long exposure, he would be as up right as possible to narrow the centre of gravity line from his head to his hips. He probably also has some hidden support for his back. A lovely pose...I'll have a go..

    3. Only the model's face is tanned, leading me to think he likely worked outdoors as a laborer. Perhaps that could have strengthened the supporting arm?

    4. Yup. He's powerfully built from labouring. Even with that, you'd need extra support. An inspiration.

    1. Even more amazing when we consider tha long exposure time that required the model to stay still for quite a while.
