Nebraska

Closing our locker room visit with a shot from the University of Nebraska in the 1950s.
I think the guy at the window is handing out towels.

  1. Compared to today's locker rooms, the ones in these pictures look pretty grim.

  2. Being the towel guy seems like it would have been a fun job to have.....

    1. Right. We had to take turns at it in high school. I didn't mind at all.

  3. Thanks for bringing back some fond memories. I had that towel guy job in high school after gym everyday. One day the instructor walked up to me, gave me a key and told me to go into the locker room and hand out towels to the guys after they showered and make sure we got them back. This was something he would do so I was surprised when he asked me. Like the photo, we had a small room with a half door and a stool for my butt This "job" was often the highlight of my day. I got to see the jocks in all their glory and often struck up some conversations. The fact they were totally at ease while standing naked just a few feet away was an eye-opener in more ways than one. Over time, I became friends with many of them and they made me feel like one of the gang. The friendships stayed with me for the rest of my time at that school. I entered that school as a shy nerd who mostly kept to himself. But, thanks to the instructor who gave me an assignment and the jocks who treated me like a bro, I grew some confidence and came out of my shell. Most importantly, I learned how to make friends with guys I thought wouldn't give the time of day. Something that always stayed with me.

    1. @James IV -- What a great post, with a happy ending. Just too bad it had to end. I also was a shy nerd in HS, but never had the privelege of serving the athletic crowd like you did.

BTW, I love your website and check it out daily -- yours and, of course, Jerry's site. Once in a blue moon, I submit a name when I can help ID guys. Thx for all your work there.

    2. 2ndWave: Thanks so much for your kind words and yes I do remember when you pitched in to help me ID someone. Much appreciated!

And Jerry, thanks again for the photo. I haven't thought of those days in quite some time.

    3. What a great story, James! You lived the fantasy most of us had!
the towels in my high school locker room were just stacked on a table, so nobody got the fun of handing them out. Though one year I was the "manager" (i e waterboy) for the Cross Country team & did get to hang out with them when they showered--I had crushes on two of them so it worked out nice :)

    4. We had to bring our own. Least you could tell who was on their way to or from gym.

    5. We were told we couldn't bring our own because some guys would use the same dirty towel for weeks on end.

  4. Jerry, locker room pics, G-rated tho they may be, are my top favorite. Thx for today's 'homage'. (BTW, "G-rated" by our standards. LOL.)
