Bill

Dave Martin's photo of Bill Derrick with a staff appeared on page 22 of an unknown
(to me at least) magazine.  Bill has been featured numerous times here on the blog.

  1. A page from Physique Pictorial Vol. 15 No. 3 published in June 1966. Miizer often promoted other male physique photographers.

    1. Thanks for the help on the magazine, James! Mizer did indeed promote other photographers. For some reason, this didn't strike me as a PP page, but the bio text overlay should have been a big clue.

  2. Dave Martin understood "elegance" did he not. This image is very Classically informed. Mr Derrick looks as if he and his staff have just walked out of Greece.

    1. Yes, very Classical. Mr. Derrick is one of the models who made my list of men whose photo portfolios are just painfully too small.

    2. Very much pose perfect. Dave Martin, clearly had an excellent "eye" when directing and placing models. Also, we can see from this that Mr Derrick had a well-developed awareness of how one positions oneself in space. Which is not easy. The result seen here is a remarkable example of this collaborative process. Aesthetically pleasing from any angle. If only we could rotate him.

    3. Yes, David, if only . . . I keep looking vainly for more photos of this gorgeous model. Thank you for your informed take on the posing and modeling in this one.

  3. Bill Derrick, like Alan Albert; tall, dark and handsome.
Too bad there are not many photos of either one of them.
Dave Martin was said to be bitter and cranky, according to some people who knew him before he passed away. All because he did not like the idea that some thought his photos were homoerotic and also that the photos were of interest to gay men. (WTF?!)

    1. Really? I never heard that, and the last part leaves me wondering if some sort of dementia had set in. I know that last bit sounds unkind, but what else could explain it?

    2. It's well known that many, if not most, of the models of that time were straight, so that part makes sense. His generation had a really hard time with sexuality that didn't match the norm, but many managed to deal with it in inventive and even humorous ways. Too bad he had a hard time.
