The only known frontal nude photo of Eugen Sandow is a grainy shot taken when his body was cast in plaster to make the statue shown above. This is the best picture I could find of the statue. And with that, I will close another series on one of the greatest bodybuilders of all time.

ReplyDeleteMore pronounced here than anywhere else I've seen it.
DeleteA fascinating look at a pioneer in body building and male beauty. I've seen that frontal shot you mentioned, but never saw the statue. Thank you, Jerry
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome!
DeleteA significant figure in history of physique photography on many fronts; pioneering fitness, gyms, bodybuilding/strongman competitions, mail order businesses, artistic collaboration, discovering talent, and LGBT (closeted but documented) influence in popular culture. Also a messy figure in many ways, but that’s half the fun. Beautiful set today and awesome subject!!💕bns
ReplyDeleteThank you. He was all of those things you mention and more.
DeleteSplendid. Thank you Jerry. He still inspires us.
ReplyDeleteMy pleasure, David!
DeleteSandow was plaster-casted in 1901 by request of Prof. Ray Lankester of the British Museum in London.
ReplyDeleteIt took several months through trial and error, and Sandow was left exhausted.
