White Marble
Mr. Sandow looks like a white marble statue in gladiator sandals in this 1894 photo.
I wonder if some artifice, photographic or makeup, was used for the effect?
Regardless, the proportions of his body approach perfection.
I think it's body make up, as his eyebrows and bush are still dark. Amazing, a real man of marble. The usual "How was the fig leaf attached?"...
ReplyDeleteI'll go with makeup as well.
DeleteTableau style physique portrait to evoke Ancient Greece.
ReplyDeleteSandow’s fig leaf is held in place by spirit gum adhesive….:)
