This is Richard M. Samuel's 1950 modeling card from the Smithsonian's Archives of American Art. Their notes indicate that he modeled for Gasparo. The beard would have been almost unheard of in 1950, and I would love to see some of this handsome man's work on canvas or paper.

ReplyDeleteMe, too!
DeleteI would love to see more of this gentleman in photos or art. I do get the feeling that we have seen him before though.
ReplyDeleteI've been looking without success.
DeleteInteresting, "perched" sitting, so that most of his weight is taken by his rear. Putting any weight on those arms would hurt. Most weight is on his left leg. Wondering if that loin cloth, so artfully draped, is hiding additional support? Some used bicycle seats on a stand.
ReplyDeleteI love your observations, David. The bycycle seat thing is a new concept for me, but it sort of makes sense.
DeleteCheers, I do go on a bit... Most life models do like to work out how it was done. It does give considerable insights in to the construction of figurative art works.
