1950
Stauch's Bath House on Coney Island was the setting for this out of focus 1950 photo.
These baths were popular with gay men in the 1940’s-1950’s. Lost its gay patronage to generational changes and attitudes, that made the Continental Baths and especially the piers more popular. It fell into disrepair in the 1960’s, was abandoned and caught fire in 1983. Stauch’s Bath was torn down in 1992. Br’klyn Boy
Those places had an interesting history. Lon Hanagan and several of his models (including the stunning Jerry Rocco) used to hang out at one of the Coney Island bath house sun decks.

DeleteI read about this place a few years ago which led me to the book When Brooklyn Was Queer by Hugh Ryan. A superb read, I highly recommend it!
ReplyDeleteI need to read that book. Amazon is my friend.
