Sandow 1895

This is hands down my favorite recent acquisition.  Eugen Sandow looks like he is looking straight into my eyes and engaged with me.  He appears incredibly strong and vulnerable at the same time.
The image was made in 1893 by the great photographer Sarony.

  1. Sandow et Sarony, des légendes en leurs temps.
Though married, the piano accompanist of Sandow, Martinus Sieveking, was said to be his lover.
When Sandow died his wife and two daughters burned all his personal papers either out of disgust or to protect his image.
Napléon Sarony was one of the great photographers and illustrators of his time, having worked for the famed Currier and Ives and establishing his own studio photographing the famous.
VMM if you have the material you should do a sèries about Sarony :)

  2. Lucky Sarony. I'm also a Sandowphile, and have never seen this one.

    1. And lucky Sandow, too. Mr. Sarony was one of the best of his generation.

    1. Quite truie. His facial expression is so vulnerable in the midst of all that brawn. Exceptional image combining the work of two exceptional men.
