The last image in this round of early 19th Century favorites is from an long disappeared tumblr
blog called Antique Erotic. It was a very well curated operation, and I miss it terribley.
I'm sure there's a Classical reference there somewhere, but it's lost on me.

Just a guess, but boxers in Ancient Greece and Rome did bind or swaddle their wrists and forearms, as you can see in the famous Hellenistic "boxer at rest".

DeleteThe boxer-with-bound-wrist motif makes sense, but it seems like we'll never know for sure. In any case, he is a beautiful man. I would have loved to see more photos of him from other angles.
