Verdun
Even men in the living hell that was Verdun got an occasional break from the fighting.
This happy Poilu is enjoying a swim at the sluice gate of a mill pond.
I can only imagine. I have the book Walking In The Footsteps Of The Fallen:Verdun 1916 and have taken the tour itself. Something you never forget and shouldn't.
The memorial at Verdun is one of the most moving and humbling places one could visit. I hope this joyful gentleman survived.
ReplyDeleteI hope so as well. I wrote an honors history term paper on Verdun in 1971, and it was difficult to read some of the accounts.
